In the River Brahmaputra, the Peacock Island is located just in the middle; here stands the revered Umananda Temple, where the presiding deity is of Lord Shiva. The island is the world’s smallest riverine island, which is inhabited by people. The smallest river island in the world, Umananda Island is a place with legends aplenty, a place where man and the wilderness co-habit in peace and serenity. Umananda Island lies at the heart of the Mighty Brahmaputra River which flows through the middle of the city of Guwahati. An island with many legends associated with it, it_ã_s pristine and calm environ has not been destroyed by the presence of human beings as yet. It was known as Peacock Island among the British Colonists who named it so based on its shape.Located in Umananda Island.                                                                                                            Basistha Ashram

Guru Vashishta (or Basistha) is credited to writing the Hindu epic of Vashishtha Ramayana (behind the scenes Ramayana). It is believed that the sage constructed this aashram and later breathed his last here.One more thing, while you head towards the temple, your vehicle will make its way through the outskirts of Garbhanga Reserve Forest which offers a memorable ride for the visitors. The road is well maintained and is bordered by huge trees; just keep in mind the steep speed-breakers though! There is no need for any special permission to enter the territory that houses the shrine so just jump into a city bus that shuttles between the city and the temple or hire an auto rickshaw.
